The Royal Society is looking for an enthusiastic policy professional with an interest in emerging technologies to join the Society as a Policy Adviser. The post is within the Resilient Futures team and the postholder will be responsible for supporting and managing projects within our programme on Emerging Technologies.

The main output of the Emerging Technologies programme are Royal Society Perspective reports. These future-facing, speculative reports focus on emerging areas that could significantly impact humanity in the coming decades and consider the ethical, social, and regulatory issues they may raise. The first in the series, iHuman, focused on neural interfaces, the second on animate materials, and the third will focus on space.  The programme is focused on creating the conditions for these technologies to develop in a well-governed way, so that their benefits can be extended to widest society, and so that they can be applied to address critical policy and societal challenges.

The position is suitable for an efficient and versatile person with a confident and mature attitude who enjoys undertaking desk research, drafting reports, and managing events and projects. They will be expected to work closely with Fellows and other experts to provide succinct evidence-based advice for policymakers. They will also contribute to the overall development of the Science Policy team and the delivery of its objectives. A genuine interest in and a sound knowledge of the science and policy issues related to emerging technologies is important for this role, as is some experience of working in policy. The successful candidate will work under the guidance of a senior member of the team.

To note, whilst we are seeking individuals to support our emerging technologies work, we also expect the successful candidate to have the versatility and breadth of interests and skills to support work in other programmes as the need arises. This includes work related to research and innovation, education, climate change and the natural environment.

Your application should highlight your experience and ability in the following four key areas:

  • Experience of working in policy
  • Written and oral communication
  • Delivering projects
  • Teamwork and stakeholder management
